Carters Mortgage Lifter was first made available to the gardening public by Curtis Choplin of North Augusta, South Carolina (SC CH C) who listed it in the 1984 Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook. He stated that he had obtained the tomato from, " M. E. Carter of Elliott, South Carolina who has grown them for many years. He got them from J. W. DuBard of Cedar Creek Section near Blythewood, South Carolina. DuBard's mother had grown them for many years before that. Believed to have been grown in the area for about a century. " Originally offered simply as "Mortgage Lifter," the Seed Savers Exchange added "Carter" to its name when they accessioned the variety.
